On a gorgeous Memorial Day Weekend our General Charley
That's right, Red Rabbit Racing's General Charley won his second race in a row at Arlington this meet and is now tied for the lead in the Meet Leaders standings at Arlington Park. The race was a $25,000 Claiming race at a mile and 1/16th on the turf. It was a 7 horse field as one of the horses had scratched and we were breaking from the 7 hole.
Prime RRR jock Eddie Perez took the call and executed Chris' directions to the letter. Charley was on the lead during every call of the race and the only view any of the other mules saw of Charley during the entire race was his majestic, muscled, dappled & dimply Ass...
In probably the best break ever recorded in thoroughbred racing history, Eddie hustled Charley out of the gate faster than Rick attacks a Buffet Table. He got him over to the fence well before the 1st turn, saving us some all important ground. Then putting Charley under a fierce strangle hold, Eddie set very slow fractions of 25.2 for the quarter and 50.2 for the half mile - all running effortlessly on the lead. Hell, Charley didn't even bother laying his ears back until he hit the stretch....
But when he got into the stretch, Eddie turned him loose and Charley ripped into another gear pulling away from the field, firmly in command by 2 lengths when he hit the wire. Pandemonium broke loose as we had an extra large crowd of Rabbits, pulling for Charley on this day. We were all hugging, high fiving, and screaming as Charley trotted proudly back to the Winners Circle. He was spent as he ran his eyeballs out down the stretch. His final time was 1.44 minutes and change and that is ripping - especially when you consider the slow early fractions he set.
Variety of pictures and info to see by clicking the links below. Picture upper left is smiling Eddie guiding Charley into the Winners Circle. Picture all the way on the bottom is Charley leading them all mid-stretch.
Thanks to Steve Gallo for all the snaps on the day and thanks to Brett 'Stonewall'
Johnson for great work on the video. Spectacular memories of a great day.
Sadly, Sr. Partner Peggy Rabbit could not make the race as she was committed to a horse show across town during that time. We missed you and don't want you to miss another one.
So we look for our next race - which in my view won't be in the 25K claimer division. Even though Chris likes the level where we are running at, I teased him with a short suggestion when we left the Winner's Circle by saying "Hey, How about entering in the Tin Man!" Chris didn't like that, buy stay tuned.
Video of the race is just to the right. Hit the play control to start it. All the way on the bottom is some video of the celebration in the Winners Circle....
PS... Does anyone think it is pure co-incidence that we haven't lost a race since Family Patriarch Bob Johnson was called home to heaven a couple months ago? Well my view is Uncle Bobby has been installed as the "Pearly Gates Racing Secretary" and is making sure he takes care of family 1st. We miss you Uncle Bob - And as always miss Pop too.
